Professional Postgraduate Program in Water Resources Engineering

Areas of Concentration and Lines of Research

The SH concentration area aims to meet the demand from society and public and private companies regarding the training of professionals and water resources management techniques. It also encompasses the technical study of engineering used to plan, design, and operate water systems intended to control and regulate water to satisfy a diverse range of purposes.

This concentration area includes the following research lines:

Applied Water Resources

It involves research and technological development with a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary focus on various areas related to water resources, including urban water systems (water supply, sewage systems, and drainage), industrial systems, building systems, reservoir operation, structures and components of hydraulic works, irrigation, navigation, among others, using as tools the interpretation and analysis of experimental data and/or mathematical modeling of hydraulic and hydrological systems. It also includes water reuse and energy recovery from waste.

Water Resources Management

It encompasses the planning, regulation, and control of water use, environmental impact assessment, as well as the preservation and restoration of water resources and economic studies applied to water resources. It also includes studies on the evaluation of public policies and the development of management models for sanitation services.

The EOC concentration area aims to train professionals capable of conducting experimental and/or numerical studies on the mechanical and hydraulic behavior of composite or natural materials (with or without additives), in order to investigate the technical and functional performance of materials and structural elements, as well as the safety of civil works, especially dams. This area includes the following research lines:
Structures and Geotechnics

It encompasses the development of structural and hydraulic device design, with a focus on the study of unconventional reinforced concrete structures and steel structures. It also includes the study of earthworks and dam safety.

Civil Construction Materials

It encompasses the technological study of conventional and non-conventional materials for civil construction, as well as the study of planning and construction management techniques.

The HG concentration area encompasses the study, design, implementation, operation, maintenance, and technical, economic, environmental, and social feasibility of hydroelectric power plants, with a focus on low-head plants, typical of the potential currently available in Brazil. It also includes the optimization and performance improvement of existing plants operating nationwide.

This concentration area includes the following research lines:

Planning and Design of Hydroenergy Systems

It encompasses the planning and design of hydroelectric power plants; the design and sizing of hydroelectric plant components, including storage plants, reservoir-based systems, and run-of-river regulation plants; hydrology, nominal and extreme flow analysis; reservoir management and flood attenuation; firm energy assessment; economic feasibility studies; hybrid power generation; development of non-conventional or emerging devices and systems for hydroenergy exploitation; studies on hydrokinetic energy, wave energy, and tidal energy; and the assessment and mitigation of environmental impacts.

Operation and Maintenance of Hydroelectric Systems

Hydraulic transients; efficiency improvement and optimization of hydroelectric generation; modeling and simulation of flow in hydraulic structures and machines; study and commissioning tests of generating units: turbine, generator, and control systems; design of components and hydraulic machines; and water quality.
